In fact, it is very practical since you can put your consultant on hold whenever business is slow and hire them again as needed.

You can also task your consultant to handle your entire marketing department. Any business owner is aware that there is a lot going on with running a business. Thus, marketing is often neglected or not done as efficiently as if you had someone who can look over marketing strategies for small business. With a business consultant, it is now possible because you can leverage their professional expertise to devise a marketing approach suited for various situations.

The above-mentioned benefits to hiring a small business marketing consultant is just a general glimpse into the services offered. The best feature about a consulting service is that it is highly flexible; thus, you can make use of this service regardless of the size, scope, and type of business you are in.

A Guide To The Importance Of Marketing

To succeed in business, you need to attract customers. Not just first-time customers, but those who continue to buy from you on a regular basis.

It’s “customers” that put you in business in the first place… and allow you keep your enterprise operating. Just the same, a lack of customers will force you out of business — in short order.

You can never actually claim to be “in business” until you first have customers. Sure, you can register a company, lease space, buy equipment, develop or acquire a product to sell, and hang out your shingle. But until the first sale… all you have are expenses.

Few businesses fail when they have a steady stream of customers willing to spend money in exchange for their product or service. Companies that establish workable systems to consistently attract customers are those most likely to succeed in the long term.

Customers are the greatest asset of any business. It’s the customer list that adds significantly to the value of a business.

Customers mean revenues and profits. They’re the very lifeblood of every business – large and small. Therefore… your focus as a business owner should be the continuous building and nurturing of your own customer list. This is what sustains your enterprise, gives you an income and enables you to consistently expand and earn even greater sales and profits.

Acquiring new customers and then keeping them for life is what it’s all about. Ideally, it should be a matter of delivering superior products and service, then renewing the sales relationship with each new customer, so they buy over and over again and… are happy to do so. With this kind of customer satisfaction, you’ll not only turn one-time buyers into lifetime customers, you’ll also automatically gain many more first-time customers by word-of- mouth referrals.

Business success begins with the first-time customer. Unless you already have a large list of customers… your primary focus should be in the area of attracting more and more
first-timers, on an ongoing basis.

So where do you begin when attracting more customers is your goal? In a word… marketing.

Effective marketing is what brings customers to you. A dependable, consistent marketing

plan and implementation system delivers customers efficiently, on a regular basis, and for a much lower investment than the hit-and-miss methods many business owners attempt.

No business can achieve optimum success without solid and consistent marketing. Without an effective marketing program in action, your growth and success in any business is unnecessarily handicapped.

What is Marketing?

A simple definition of marketing would be anything that you do to get customers or to keep customers. Your display ads, newsletters, web sites, sales letters, direct mail packages, brochures, Yellow Pages ads, classifieds, etc., all represent part of the marketing picture. The same goes for your sales people, service staff, letterhead, business cards, as well as the sign on your office or shop.

Every representation of your company…every contact you have with prospects or customers… every perception a prospect or customer gathers… is in effect, marketing. Marketing is a never-ending function of business – you’re always marketing whether you realize it or not. And every facet of marketing either helps your business prosper, or it hinders growth and profitability.

Everything is marketing and… marketing is everything to your success!

If you want to expand in the most expedient, cost-efficient and proven way, you need to take a good look at your overall marketing strategy. When you realize that “everything is marketing”… you begin to look at your business operation in a whole new light. You’ll see obvious mistakes when you consider how your customer or prospect might view a particular situation, event, or marketing document.

There are 4 fundamental elements of successful marketing to consider:

Product – You must have a quality product or service with widespread appeal and you need to be either competitively priced, or offer something that’s superior to what anybody else offers.

Prospects – You need to have a market to sell to. Who are your prospects? Is the market large enough to serve your continual growth?

Media – You also have to have a way to get your message across to your market. What methods provide the best, most reliable access to your market?

Message – The message is your communication with your market. It’s everything you put into your advertising and marketing materials to convince prospects and customers to buy.

All those elements are essential to marketing success.

Think of your business as a bridge that has 4 main columns supporting the entire weight of the bridge. The 4 columns are named: Product, Prospects, Media and Message.

These 4 columns are the supporting structures that provide the rock-solid foundation of your business. A deficiency in any one area throws the whole bridge into peril. In your business, any weakness severely hampers your profit opportunities. When all 4 areas are strong, your chances of success are multiplied exponentially.

The best place to start is to spot the market first. Identify a market with “wants”…then figure out which of those desires your product can fulfill. Next…decide on the media that will enable you to access this market segment and then prepare a strong sales message.

In order to attract first-time customers economically, you’ll need to develop an appealing marketing message —one that gives you a clear competitive advantage— and deliver it to the best prospects in the most effective and cost-efficient way.

Marketing Options for Every Business Owner

There are marketing options for every business owner. A Good business marketing consultant has done their homework and are adept at putting together a customized plan for every client, based on those individuals marketing budget and expectations.

Novice small business owners may feel as though they cannot afford to work with a marketing firm. However, this expense is well justified for many of them. These particular individuals are aware of the importance of getting their business off to a good start, especially when they are up against a great deal of competition.

Types of Business Marketing Consultants

There are many types of business marketing. Depending on the business niche, some types of marketing are more successful than others. Marketing consultants can help the business owner decide on the options best suited for the business.

Types of Internet marketing include: email campaigns or newsletter creation, coupon distribution, pay per click ads, article marketing and blogging, contest sponsorship, banner ads and surveys.

Coupons typically work well to attract repeat customers. Everyone likes to get something at a discount or for nothing. When customers are already familiar with the quality of a product they are typically more apt to use a coupon that has been presented to them.

Contests usually draw a large audience. Everyone likes to get something for nothing. Entering a contest not only familiarizes them with the prizes being offered it also gives them the opportunity to look at other company-offered products and services, as well.

Business marketing consultants can attest that a certain percentage of contest entrants will go as far as purchasing one of these additional products.

Marketing For Optometrists

Marketing for optometrists to achieve the best possible return on investment is always attractive, especially in the midst of tough economic times. Traditional advertising methods – like print media advertising, for instance- can be costly and difficult to evaluate.

In contrast, online advertising is generally low-cost, with a greater (or at least more easily trackable) return on investment. Here are five ways that you can advertise your practice without breaking the bank:

Email Marketing For Optometrists

One of the main advantages of marketing for optometrists via email is that it costs so little yet is still an effective way to keep you in your patients’ minds on a regular basis. Email marketing allows you to remind both active and inactive patients about your practice, while providing them with useful eye health information, electronic coupons, and other desirable content.

A monthly or quarterly e-newsletter is the perfect way to keep in touch, prompting your patients to schedule appointments rather than putting them off.

Website Marketing For Optometrists

A website is a necessity these days, and it’s also capable of yielding an extremely high return on your investment. Since more and more patients are seeking care providers via Google and Yahoo, making sure that your website is visible in search results and attractive to site visitors is crucial.

Make sure that your website targets local searches; register with Google Maps and Yahoo Local for the best results, and be sure to include terms related to your physical location on your website. For instance, if you are located in the lower west side of Manhattan, you may want to focus on specific neighborhoods that you’re close to: the West Village, Chelsea, Soho, and Tribeca. People tend to search by neighborhood (in a large city) or by town, county, or region.

Pay-Per Click Advertising

Advertising via pay-per-click can also yield excellent results, particularly if you have stiff competition in the organic search results (the ten results that appear on a typical search page.)

Blogs: Blogs are a great way for doctors and staff to inform patients on all areas of the practice. Blogs can serve as a way for optometrists to distribute information on important optical conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and even presbyopia.

Blogs can also serve as a way to update patients and customers on new shipments of frames, sales, and other marketing information. A frequently updated blog will also improve a website’s overall search engine ranking which will ultimately bring in new patients. Blogs also allow for patients to feel closer to their doctor and practice.

Glasses Information: A page or section dedicated to glasses is the perfect way for patients to become familiar with options that are available to them. This information can include the latest lens options such as Transitions or anti-reflective coatings, as well as the latest progressive lens styles and benefits. A list of offered frame brands and other information pertinent to glasses can also be listed here.

Contact Lens Information: With so many patients turning to contact lenses it’s only appropriate to have a section for contact lens wearers. Here prices for different brands can be listed, how many boxes are necessary for an annual supply can be listed, and care facts can be listed.

Practice Information: If your practice has new specialized equipment, a special service (such as Vision Therapy), or even if your doctor has new training, your practice information can be the perfect space to set your office apart. This is the ideal space to give your office a leg up on the competition.

Basic Information: Of course every website will include basic information such as phone number, address, office hours, and directions. This is a perfect resource for patients looking for an office to make appointments, or even return customers who misplaced your phone number. Having a website with basic information alone improves your practice’s chance of being found on the internet.

Marketing Strategy Small Business

Social media or more correctly social technologies bring to mind FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn but there are literally hundreds of different networking and blogging sites out there and as a small business owner how do you decide which social site is right for you?

So you are in the position to start some online marketing for small business and someone has mentioned social media but where to begin?

This depends on what kind of small business you are in and what level of web presence you have already achieved. You may have had a website designer build you a flashy, all singing, all dancing, expensive website but that is as much use as a billboard in the Antarctic…who will see it?

No matter how slick and professional your site is if it has not been fully optimised (been made search engine friendly) then it wont appear anywhere near the top of a search engine listing and potential clients simply wont see it.

If you don’t have a website then it is important that you seriously consider investing in one. Consider carefully who you get to build one for you, as creative and talented as some website designers are, by their own admission they are not marketers. Having an online marketer build your site means not only do your get a great looking site but right from the beginning your site will be search engine friendly.

With a website under your belt let’s tackle social technologies. Social technology is the umbrella term for social media, social networking and social relevancy. Social media are sites such as YouTube, Flickr and Photobucket, social networking includes FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn and social relevancy is all about how people perceive you and your small business on the internet.

Social media is primarily all about sharing information in video and photograph formats so while any business can use social media it is perhaps more suited to and enjoyed by more creative industries.

Social networking is all about keeping in touch with clients and reaching out to prospective clients. Any small business can really make use of sites like Twitter and Facebook and as long as it is done correctly they can really build good customer relationships.

LinkedIn is a social networking site that is really geared towards the business sector and as a small business owner you should really consider joining. You can get loads of information from other small business owners and can really stay to create and online presence. By freely giving good advice and joining in on conversation with quality comments you can start to establish yourself as an expert in your field and begin to manage your online reputation.

Social relevancy is, in the next few years going to be big. How you manage what is said about you and your small business online is important. If you have members of staff that regularly post to sites on your behalf it is important to brainstorm with them and come up with an online reputation management policy. By doing this you will ensure that should a negative comment be made everyone knows how to deal with it. Likewise when a positive comment is posted an appropriate response can follow.

So as you can see marketing for small business online can be a bit more involved that you though but it is not something that should be overlooked. There are suitable sites out there for you to dip your toe in the social media waters.

Marketing With Content

The beginner strikes out and doesn’t see the dangers ahead. The novice driven by passionate curiosity doesn’t see the complexity of the task of mastery. It is just seen as an exciting adventure.

But as they dive into the the complex ecosystem of subjects, technologies and thought bubbles that sat in and around the core, doubts emerge and questions are raised. The content marketer has the same challenges.

Should I be creating live stream videos, become proficient at the new platforms or master marketing automation. Should I start a podcast? A webinar?

Overwhelm strikes.

This is the point that many people stop. They have so many choices that they freeze. Hesitate.

The trick?

Work out what to focus on.

The one skill

There is one skill that all content marketers need to learn. The art of writing.

Good writing skills underlines and supports video and even audio. The headline, script and description are just a few. Crafted words and considered communication are important in changing minds and moving hearts.

But If any sort of writing talents were bypassed at birth then you may need to hire them. That maybe an ex-journalist, trained writers or start asking guest authors to contribute.

The hidden benefit of writing

Now content marketing can often be seen as just a customer acquisition tool and also for positioning you as a thought leader and influencer in your industry. But that is only part of the reason you should be creating content and writing.

Content creation can sometimes feel like a waste of time that distracts you from billing clients and making money. But writing every day about your industry and your core topics will take you to a new level of insight, learning and clarity.

The discipline and craft of wrangling words will change and transform your life if you commit to it.

So what is important?

Writing well requires many elements. So what is important? Well I can state the obvious and mention grammar and spelling.

When I first started out the writing police turned up in the comments and on Facebook. My amateur proficiency at grammar and spelling were called out. But don’t let that stop you. You are doing something many people don’t do. Executing and doing. Many people stop at a good idea.

But beyond those two fundamentals there are some insights that stand out for me. And when I started out I hardly gave them a passing thought.

Here are some aspects of writing for the social web that need to included in your content marketing toolbox.

The goal of the headline is to get you to read the first line. That is the start of your introduction.

Then the goal is to get them to read the rest. Draw them in. How do you do that?

Here are 3 quick and dirty tips to get you thinking about how to craft your introductions.

Open with a question
Use Storytelling is another way to start a blog post or an article. Stories have been with us since the dawn of time.s
Provide a quote

Ever seen a wall of dense text with long paragraphs and close spacing? Does it make you want to click away?

In a time poor digital world where people dive into and out of online posts and text means that you need to work on structure. Writing a blog post that is designed for skimming and scanning is essential.

Use sub-headings, bullet points and short paragraphs in your writing.

“I would have written you a shorter letter but didn’t have the time”.

This quote attributed to many highlights the importance of producing clarity from what is often a cloud of confusion. This is more important in a digital world where technology engulfs us. Making the effort to be clear in your writing is worth striving for.

More is not better and often an important insight is buried in a mountain of words.

Distilling complex concepts into clarity is a skill to develop and hone. As you write you need to put on your starting goggles. You need to write with the mind of a beginner. Put yourself in their shoes.

You were an amatuer once.

Ever heard a speaker that spoke in a monotone and the same rhythm? Bored? But you couldn’t leave the room?

On the web you are only one click away from oblivion. Good writing needs rhythm. So be interesting and mix up the length of your sentences.

Short sentences, medium and long are part of your writing toolkit. Even one word sentences work well.

Spelling it out is good. So making the content so clear that you lead them by the hand is often needed.

But sometimes getting people to fill in the blanks themselves is a powerful way to get them motivated. Let them work it out themselves is an important tactic to use.

Imagination is a powerful force that allows people to come up with their own solutions. So try some abstraction that suggests rather than tells.

Sounding smart and using big words may be tempting. But unless you are trying to impress your professor while writing your thesis then avoid words that can’t be read or understood by a nine year old.

A book that is worth reading and has helped me is one of Stephen King’s few non-fiction books titled “On Writing”. In it he uses an example of a clever and powerful 53 word sentence from Mark Twain. He points out that 38 of those words are single syllable.

Big words and industry speak (think acronyms) are to be avoided at all cost.

Keep it simple.

“People will forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel”.

In that quote (often attributed to Carl Buechner) is the truth about the art of storytelling. Touching people’s hearts is at the centre of engagement. When I started my online publishing venture it was all about the facts. Information, data and stats.

When I commenced my speaking career my Powerpoint’s were all about bullet points. More information and more stuff. When I began writing emails the facts were the main hero.

But if you want to move people, educate and transform you need more than that in your writing toolbox.

As marketers you need stories to be memorable. To persuade.

In a digital age and a noisy world we need the art of storytelling more than ever. This will make your writing compelling and engaging. Touching hearts and imagination is one of your main goals.
